Mandawa is a market town in north-east Rajasthan visited by tourist for its imposing architecture grandeur wall paintings and frescoes. In ancient times it was on the silk route of China. The inhabitants of the region are the brave Shekhawati who even today prefer to join the Indian Army. From the 18th century influential merchants settled in the town. The proof of this lies in the many colorful havelis as well as baolis in the region.
The havelis visited by the tourists in the region are Ladia, chokhani, Newatia, Binsidhar, and Gulab Rai Ladia. The paintings on the wall are artistic in nature even though some of them have been defaced. The wealthy merchants built castles with paintings of different themes adorning their walls. Mandawa Castle of the 18th century has delicate murals. The place is now a hotel with minimum changes. The view of the ramparts is very interesting.
Authentic Rajasthani food is served in roof top restaurants and havelis now running eating joints. Some places serve organic food which is very much appreciated by visitors. Open air and bamboo roof structures add to the ambience of the place. The cost is affordable and food piping hot. The food served is very much like the home food.
The antique shops are full of handcrafts of the region and ancient stuff. Tourits flock these shops and carry good souvenirs back home for their near and dear ones. Bargaining is allowed and the cost is not exorbitant.
The nearest airport is Jaipur 167 km away. The railway station is also at Jaipur which extends connectivity to the place through road. Another station Mukundgarh is 14km away. Road network of taxis, buses cars is good and most tourists prefer to travel through this mode of transport.
